Belle Époque Opal and Diamond Drop Earrings in 18ct Rose Gold
Cabochon Cut, Rubover Set
Description
A pair of 18ct rose gold cabochon opal and old cut diamond drop earrings from the Belle Époque period. Opals became increasing popular during the latter half of the 19th-century after extensive deposits of superb examples were discovered in Australia. The rainbow flashes from the four cabochon examples that have been securely rubover set into these earrings are perfectly complimented by the delicate sparkle of old cut diamond set elements that have been showcased as the central element of each earring. These elements are composed of scrollwork “C” shaped motifs with a central lozenge. The Belle Époque or Beautiful Era (1871-1914) produced some incredibly interesting pieces, as it encompassed the Art Nouveau, Arts and Crafts, and Edwardian periods. The scrolling “C” shaped motifs remind us of elaborate strapwork decoration that originated in the 15th century. Practical hook fittings ensure these are effortless to take in and out of the ear.
