Classic Cartier Watch Collections
The Cartier watch collection features iconic designs that have defined luxury watchmaking for over a century. At the heart of this legacy stands the Cartier Tank, one of the most recognisable watches in the world. Its distinctive rectangular case and clean lines epitomise elegant simplicity, worn by Princess Diana, Jackie Kennedy, and Andy Warhol—cementing its status as a cultural icon that transcends generations.
Equally significant is the Santos de Cartier, the world's first modern men's wristwatch. Its square bezel and exposed screws reflect aviation heritage, while the Ballon Bleu de Cartier offers a contrasting aesthetic with softer curves, rounded cases, and the signature blue sapphire crown guard. For those drawn to bold design, the Panthère de Cartier celebrates the Maison's emblematic animal through fluid, bracelet-like construction—a symbol of confident femininity. The Pasha de Cartier brings sporty sophistication with its distinctive crown guard, while the Ronde de Cartier returns to classical round elegance. Each collection, though distinctly different, maintains Cartier's unwavering commitment to timeless design. Explore our men's Cartier watches and ladies' Cartier watches to find your perfect timepiece.
Cartier Watch History & Heritage
Since 1847, Cartier has influenced luxury watchmaking despite its origins as a jeweller rather than traditional watchmaker. When Adolphe Picard handed his Paris workshop to apprentice Louis-François Cartier in 1847, he established what would become one of the world's most prestigious watch brands. Louis-François' son Alfred joined in 1874, bringing vision for expanding into fine watches—producing the first ladies' wristwatches in 1888.
The brand's transformation began in 1899 when Louis Cartier joined the family firm. His meeting with Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904 proved pivotal. When Santos-Dumont complained that pocket watches were unsuitable for flying, Louis Cartier accepted the challenge. In 1911, he launched the Cartier Santos—a flat timepiece worn on the wrist with a leather strap and distinctive square bezel. The watch's success with Santos-Dumont, combined with his celebrity status, made men's wristwatches fashionable for the first time, persuading Parisian aristocracy to accept this revolutionary concept.
The Cartier Tank followed in 1917, inspired by Renault tanks on the Western Front during WWI. Its rectangular case mimics the overhead view of a tank, with vertical sidebars representing the treads. Entering full production in 1919, it remains in production today—one of the most famous watch designs ever created. Over the decades, Cartier watches have graced the wrists of Muhammad Ali, JFK, and Kate Middleton, cementing their status as icons of timeless luxury.
