Description
In 1904, Louis Cartier crafted a timepiece for his friend, the pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, that could be read at a glance whilst airborne. In doing so, he did not simply create a watch he created the wristwatch as we know it. This large model is crafted in 18ct yellow gold, its sunray-brushed taupe grey dial framed by the Santos's characteristic rounded angles and exposed screws. Arabic numerals and gold-finish sword-shaped hands ensure perfect legibility, honouring the original brief that inspired the design's existence. The beaded crown set with a blue cabochon sapphire adds a signature touch of Cartier colour, whilst the case back carries the handwritten signature of Alberto Santos-Dumont himself a permanent tribute to the man who set it all in motion. Powered by the mechanical Calibre 430 MC with manual winding and presented on a grey alligator strap with an 18ct yellow gold ardillon buckle, this is a watch of rare historical distinction. At 43.5mm by 31.4mm and just 7.3mm thick, it wears with the quiet confidence of a true original. Water-resistant to 30 metres. All Cartier watches come with a two-year international guarantee, which can be extended to eight years through Cartier Care, unlocking exclusive benefits and services.
