Our Quest

Generations of Expertise

Each of the gemstones featured in our Masterpiece collection has been hand-selected by a member of the Pragnell family; chosen for unique attributes that elevate them above others of their kind, marking them out as phenomenal gemstones. We take pride in offering an unparalleled breadth of these exquisite, rare gems, which include an exceptional, rich blue Star Sapphire, a striking Australian black Opal and an extraordinary colour-changing Alexandrite.

Australian Black Opal

A Kaleidoscopic Phenomenon

As hypnotising as a galaxy of stars, these rare iridescent gemstones contain a kaleidoscope of colours that makes them incomparable to any other gems. Lightning Ridge Black Opals were first discovered in Australia in the early 1900s. This exceptionally rare stone has a dark base material, exhibiting large flashes of red in a highly prized vivid Harlequin patchwork of blues, greens and oranges. The colours are perfectly complemented by a gallery featuring sapphires, Paraiba tourmaline, ruby and Tsavorite garnet.

Star Sapphire

A Celestial Surprise

Exposure to light causes these sapphires to exhibit a ‘star’ effect, known as asterism. This star-like burst of light that appears in motion across the surface of the gem is caused by tiny, needle-like inclusions that reflect light from within the stone. Typically cut in a cabochon shape to maximise the effect, the best examples are prized for their rich blue hues, and bright six-armed stars with exceptional definition such as feature in our new Masterpiece Ring. Finding Star Sapphires that have not undergone any treatments to enhance their appearance is rarer still, but this is one.

Alexandrite

Emerald by Day, Ruby by Night

Alexandrite is famed for its extraordinary ability to change colour in different lights. This is occurs because these rare gemstones have a high chrome content, changing how our eyes perceive them. In natural sunlight, alexandrite shimmers with vibrant emerald green hues; in low lighting, it appears instead as deep ruby red. This Alexandrite Phenomenal gemstone is particularly extraordinary only for its size, but also for the extremes to which it changes colour.
