Hallmarked Birmingham
Description
A rare and exceptional Victorian silver five-piece suite by the celebrated silversmiths Elkington & Co., hallmarked Birmingham between 1898 and 1900.The suite comprises three graduated two-handled bowls and two matching jugs, each piece richly chased with classical figural friezes depicting figures and mythological scenes. The bowls are mounted with boldly cast panther head handles, raised on gadrooned spreading feet, and presented on ebonised wooden plinths, while the two matching jugs echo the same classical vocabulary, ensuring a striking unity of design throughout the suite. Elkington & Co. were among the most distinguished silversmiths of the Victorian era, and a suite of this scale, completeness, and quality represents the firm at the very height of its powers.
