Description

A 6.14ct sunset orange cushion cut topaz shimmers with warming tones as the centrepiece of this stunning ring from the Victorian period. This beautiful gemstone has been securely rub over set into warm 18ct yellow gold, and surrounded by a border of sparkling old cut diamonds (0.63ct) set into silver. Before the appearance of platinum the lustre of silver was used to showcase the best diamonds and gemstones. Closed back settings have been intricately line engraved, and ensure the central topaz and diamonds sparkle beautifully in soft candlelight. Split shoulders are defined by further old cut diamonds, and top an elaborate shank composed of rich scrollwork motives. Found largely in Brazil the size, colour and clarity of the best topaz crystals meant they were a hugely popular gemstone during the Georgian and later Victorian periods. The delicate and feminine colour tones of orange topaz perfectly suited rich yellow gold settings, and extravagant parures showcasing this Brazilian wonder were worn by the great and the good. The most sought after orange topaz is referred to as Imperial topaz, and hugely valuable crystals weighing nearly 1,000 carats have been discovered Our Preto, Brazil.
