Largely found in the Lightning Ridge region of Australia, black opals were formed approximately sixty million years ago when silica-rich water seeped into cracks and voids within the earth. As the water gradually evaporated, it left behind deposits of silica which, over millions of years, formed the extraordinary opals we admire today. The finest and most sought-after black opals are exceptionally rare and are often reserved for showpiece rings, pendants and earrings. Designed by members of the Pragnell family, the softly curved profile of the central opal is beautifully complemented by a richly polished, buttery 18ct yellow gold mount. Beneath the stone, small sparkling brilliant cut diamonds (0.17ct), have been intricately set around the under-bezel, adding an unexpected touch of brilliance and catching the light with every movement.
