(Published April 2026)
Since 1990, the Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award has recognised individuals whose work has deepened understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of William Shakespeare. Past recipients include Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Patrick Stewart, and, most recently, Cheek by Jowl (2025).
In 2026, Patsy Rodenburg OBE receives the Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Shakespearean theatre and classical voice.
A Lifetime Dedicated to Shakespeare and Voice
Patsy Rodenburg OBE is among the world’s most influential voice teachers, transforming how Shakespeare is spoken, heard, and understood on stage. Born and raised in London, she trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and has dedicated her career to unlocking clarity, truth, and presence in classical performance.
She has worked extensively with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, founding the Voice Department at the latter. Her rigorous yet human-centred training has shaped generations of actors.
Shakespearean Influence and Legacy
As Head of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and through her long association with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, Rodenburg has influenced generations of actors, embedding vocal clarity, emotional truth, and deep respect for Shakespeare’s language at the heart of performance.
Her achievements include being named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) and, in 2025, Emeritus Director of Voice at the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award
Each year, a committee from the Shakespeare Institute, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, and the Royal Shakespeare Company selects the Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award recipient. The award is presented during the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations in Stratford-upon-Avon, honouring enduring contributions to Shakespearean theatre.
This year's event, held on Saturday 25th April, features four traditional toasts:
1. Shakespeare and the Theatre: by the 2026 Award recipient
2. Shakespeare and the Town: by Professor Lena Orlin
3. The Immortal Memory of Shakespeare: by Professor Marlin Blaine
4. The Worldwide Appreciation of Shakespeare: by Devon Glover “the Sonnet Man”
