Natural Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds sourced from South Africa

South African Yellow Diamonds: From Mine to Masterpiece

During a visit to South Africa, members of the Pragnell family encountered an exceptional selection of rough yellow diamonds with a combined weight of more than 130 carats. Each stone was believed to offer the rare potential of achieving the coveted Fancy Vivid Yellow grade when cut, presenting an extraordinary opportunity to become involved at the very beginning of its transformation.

Acquired directly from the source, each diamond could be followed through the cutting and polishing process before being entrusted to Pragnell’s designers and craftspeople. This unbroken journey, from the rough stone to the finished jewel, captures the essence of our Mine to Masterpiece philosophy.

A Rare Opportunity at Source

The Pragnell family regularly travels the world in pursuit of exceptional gemstones. Visiting the places from which stones originate provides greater visibility of how mining partners operate and helps build enduring relationships with those who share our values.

These trusted partnerships can also provide access to important gemstones at their earliest stage, before a cutter has determined their final shape and character. Selecting a diamond in the rough allows our specialists to guide its journey and consider how its individual qualities might best be revealed.

Developed over generations, these relationships are strengthened through regular visits to diamond-producing regions, including recent sourcing journeys to South Africa and Botswana, where members of the Pragnell family met mining, sorting and cutting specialists involved in every stage of a diamond's journey.

A Golden Opportunity Seized

The selection discovered in South Africa comprised rough yellow diamonds weighing more than 130 carats in total. Their potential made the opportunity particularly compelling, with the stones believed to be capable of achieving the highly prized Fancy Vivid Yellow grade after cutting.

Rather than acquiring the diamonds only after they had been polished, Pragnell was involved from the outset. Working closely with skilled cutters and polishers, each decision could be considered individually, balancing the proportions, character and potential of every stone.

This is not simply a process of revealing size or colour. It is an exercise in judgement, patience and respect for the natural material, with every stage helping to shape the final jewel.

Shaping Colour and Character

Before any cutting began, each rough crystal was assessed for its colour saturation, inclusions, shape, clarity characteristics, crystal structure and overall potential. Advanced 3D modelling supported the planning process, helping specialist cutters consider how each stone’s size, colour intensity and beauty could best be balanced.

Fancy Vivid Yellow diamonds present a particular challenge because the distribution of colour within the rough crystal must be carefully considered. Decisions made at this early stage influence the finished diamond’s shape, proportions and intensity of colour.

Once cutting and polishing were complete, the finished diamonds were independently assessed by internationally recognised laboratories, including the Gemological Institute of America, before being entrusted to Pragnell’s designers and craftspeople.

“With coloured diamonds, it is about finding the perfect balance between size, colour intensity and beauty.”

Revealing the Colour Within

Once cut and certified, the yellow diamonds travelled to Pragnell’s workshops in the heart of England. Here, the design team considered each stone individually, developing a composition that would complement its shape, colour and proportions.

Setting style, precious metals and supporting colourless diamonds were carefully brought together before Pragnell’s goldsmiths began the work of creating the finished rings. The resulting pieces are individual Masterpieces, designed to celebrate the provenance and distinctive appearance of these South African yellow diamonds.

The Sunset Yellow Diamond Ring

At the heart of the story is the Sunset Yellow Diamond Ring, centred on a natural 25.19ct cushion-cut Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond. Set in 18ct yellow gold and complemented by colourless diamonds, the finished design celebrates the depth and warmth of the central stone.

The diamond's journey began as a 53.04ct rough crystal discovered in South Africa, before being expertly cut, polished and transformed into the exceptional Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond seen today.
