Responsible Gemstone Sourcing at Pragnell

(Published April 2026)
At Pragnell, responsible gemstone sourcing is fundamental to the integrity of every piece we create. For over six generations, we have combined exceptional beauty with ethical responsibility, guided by expert gemmological judgement at every stage of selection. Each diamond and coloured gemstone is assessed for provenance, integrity and suitability before it is chosen, ensuring our jewellery reflects both responsible luxury and enduring craftsmanship.
From the origin of each stone to its final setting in our British workshops, responsible sourcing is not an abstract principle but an informed, traceable process — one shaped by experience, transparency and respect for the people and environments connected to each jewel.
What Responsible Gemstone Sourcing Means
Responsible gemstone sourcing sits at the heart of our wider sustainability commitments. At Pragnell, it means taking accountability for the journey of every gemstone — from its point of origin to its place in a finished jewel — and ensuring each step meets our exacting standards.
In practice, this includes:
• Ethical and responsible mining practices
• Environmental care and long-term stewardship
• Fair labour and community consideration
• Transparent, well-managed supply chains
Every gemstone is reviewed and selected by Pragnell’s expert gemmologists, who apply professional judgement, industry knowledge and provenance checks to ensure each stone meets our requirements for natural beauty, integrity and responsible origin.
Ethical Diamond Sourcing
Every Pragnell diamond is 100% conflict-free and sourced in full compliance with the Kimberley Process, the internationally recognised framework designed to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the supply chain. This ensures that each diamond is natural, ethically obtained and responsibly traded.
Our GIA-trained gemmologists review many thousands of diamonds, selecting only those that meet Pragnell’s standards for beauty, quality and provenance. Independent certification from respected laboratories such as GIA, IGI and HRD provides further transparency, underpinning our commitment to responsible sourcing from mine to masterpiece.
Responsible Coloured Gemstone Sourcing
Pragnell applies the same rigorous ethical principles to coloured gemstones, including sapphires, rubies, emeralds and rare stones. Unlike diamonds, coloured gemstones are sourced from a wide range of regions and mining structures, often without a single global regulatory framework. This makes expert assessment and trusted relationships essential.
Our gemmologists carefully examine and hand-select each stone, considering origin, treatment disclosures, supply routes and overall integrity. Where possible, we work directly with established mines and long-standing suppliers to improve traceability from the original rough stone through to the finished jewel. Where full traceability is not available, stones are selected only where sourcing standards, expertise and transparency align with Pragnell’s uncompromising expectations.
Transparency & Traceability
Transparency is central to responsible sourcing. Pragnell is committed to providing clear insight into gemstone provenance and, wherever possible, openly declaring the country of origin of its jewellery. Each gemstone’s journey — from extraction and selection through cutting and final setting — is approached with diligence and integrity.
We recognise that traceability can vary depending on gemstone type, origin and history, particularly for rare or historic stones. In all cases, Pragnell prioritises informed disclosure, professional oversight and honest communication, allowing clients to trust not only the beauty of their jewellery, but the story behind it.
Environmental & Community Responsibility
Responsible gemstone sourcing extends beyond traceability. Pragnell partners only with suppliers who share our commitment to environmental protection and long-term stewardship, including responsible land management and restoration following mining activity.
We also recognise the vital role responsible mining plays in supporting local communities, helping to provide employment, skills training and long-term economic stability in regions connected to gemstone production.
Responsible Jewellery Council Membership
Pragnell is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) — the jewellery industry’s leading sustainability and standards organisation. This independent certification confirms that our business meets stringent requirements across ethical sourcing, human rights, environmental responsibility and supply chain transparency.
