Art Nouveau Cabochon Opal & Diamond Long Chain Necklace in 18ct Yellow Gold
Cabochon & Old Cut, Rubover Set
Description
A delicate 18ct yellow gold, opal and diamond long chain necklace from the Art Nouveau period. Showcasing exceptional craftsmanship slim brushed finished undulating chain links form this beautiful jewel, which at its full length drops to 85cm. Large and small cabochon opal and old cut diamond stations define this piece, which have been formed into naturalistic leaf and tendril patterns. Widely collected by connoisseurs today, jewellery from the Art Nouveau period (1890-1915) was very different to the more severe neo-classical styles that had come before. Focusing onto the wonders of nature the very best pieces showcase organic lines, which can clearly be seen here. Flashing a rainbow of colours cabochon opals (2.43cts), and old cut diamonds are in perfect harmony with the delicate nature of the design. Long necklaces were popular during this era as they could be worn to maximum effect cascading over the elaborate bodice sections of gowns, and defined by other necklaces and brooches. An early devotee of Art Nouveau was the last Russian Empress Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918) who favoured this style to decorate her personal apartments in the Alexander Palace (Tsarskoe Selo).
