Victorian Silver Stag John Samuel Hunt, 1862

An exceptional Victorian silver sculpture by one of England’s most celebrated silversmiths. A magnificent Victorian sterling silver stag, crafted by John Samuel Hunt and bearing a London assay hallmark for 1862. Elegantly modelled in full stride, the stag is captured with an impressive sense of movement and naturalism, from its powerful musculature and textured coat to its magnificent, highly articulated antlers. The sculpture stands upon an imposing ebonised presentation plinth, incorporating classical architectural detailing and decorative silver ornament. The front is further embellished with a finely rendered royal coat of arms and silver swag decoration, creating a presentation worthy of an important Victorian commission. John Samuel Hunt (1785–1865) was one of the most important London silversmiths of the 19th century. He was associated with the renowned Hunt & Roskell firm and produced exceptional examples of Victorian silver, including highly accomplished sculptural and naturalistic works. This stag, dated 1862, was created towards the end of Hunt's career and exemplifies the Victorian fascination with wildlife, sporting imagery and elaborate silver sculpture. The combination of finely modelled silver and an ornate presentation mount makes it an especially impressive example of 19th-century English silver craftsmanship.
