Victorian Silver 'Jorrocks' Condiment Stands Edward Charles Brown, 1878
Hallmarked London
Description
A remarkable and highly collectable set of six Victorian silver condiment stands, each surmounted by a finely cast and chased figure depicting a character from the beloved Jorrocks series, the comic sporting tales of the grocer-turned-huntsman John Jorrocks, created by the celebrated author R S Surtees. Each figure stands upon a rectangular footed base engraved with a caption, the silverwork throughout displaying the accomplished modelling and attention to detail that characterises the finest Victorian decorative silver. The set is complete with six rounded spoons and six oval spoons, making it not only a striking display piece but a fully functional condiment service. Made by the London silversmith Edward Charles Brown and hallmarked 1878, this is a set that combines the craft of the silversmith with the charm and wit of one of the great Victorian literary characters.
