Description
A fine Victorian silver handbell, hallmarked London, 1894. Of substantial and elegant form, the bell features a striking, dark wood or ebony cylindrical handle flanked by silver collars and surmounted by a finely cast, naturalistic pinecone finial, raised upon a classic undecorated domed bell with a flared, spreading foot and a simple, polished border. The body is further enhanced with a highly reflective, unadorned surface that beautifully offsets the contrasting textures of the turned handle, lending the piece a distinctive mixed-media character, while the polished silver surface accentuates its clean geometric proportions and crisp detailing. A particularly fine example of late 19th-century British silver, displaying the inventive aesthetic combinations typical of late Victorian functional design, and equally suited to practical use, display, or as a notable addition to a collection of English table silver.
