Victorian Silver and Glass Handbell 1894
Hallmarked London
Description
A fine Victorian silver and glass handbell, hallmarked London, 1894. Of substantial and elegant form, the bell features a heavily chased and pierced silver handle depicting detailed foliate scrolls and a prominent bird motif, surmounted by a decorative scalloped finial, raised upon an ornate silver-mounted glass bell with a flared, spreading foot and a simple, polished rim. The upper body is further enhanced with an elaborate, openwork silver overlay featuring lattice patterns, swags, and scrollwork that drapes elegantly over the pale glass bowl, lending the piece a distinctive mixed-media character, while the polished silver surface accentuates its ornate proportions and crisp detailing. A particularly fine example of late 19th-century British decorative art, showcasing the Victorian flair for combining translucent glass with intricate, high-relief silversmithing, and equally suited to ceremonial use, display, or as a notable addition to a collection of English novelty silver.
