Victorian Large Regimental Handbell 1893
Hallmarked London
Description
A fine Victorian silver large regimental handbell, hallmarked London, 1893, made for J. N. Mappin. Of substantial and elegant form, the bell features a tall baluster-shaped handle surmounted by a coronet-form finial, raised upon a domed bell with a broad, spreading foot and finely reeded borders. The body is further enhanced with engraved and applied regimental decoration, lending the piece a distinctive ceremonial character, while the polished silver surface accentuates its graceful proportions and crisp detailing. A particularly fine example of late 19th-century British silver, reflecting the Victorian fascination with military and regimental presentation pieces, and equally suited to ceremonial use, display, or as a notable addition to a collection of English silver.
