Silver Queen Victoria Scottish Silver-Gilt Trophy 1883
Hallmarked Edinburgh
Description
A magnificent silver-gilt trophy of amphora form, the generous body divided into zones of fluted and chased foliate decoration, with a broad band of densely worked acanthus scrollwork to the centre. The elegant scroll handles are formed from openwork volutes with applied vine leaf decoration, rising to the flared and gadrooned rim. The whole is raised on a stepped circular foot and mounted on an ebonised wooden plinth with gilt presentation cartouches. Hallmarked Edinburgh 1883, this is a trophy of considerable presence and ambition, the warm gilded finish lending it a ceremonial grandeur entirely in keeping with the Scottish tradition of grand sporting and civic silver. A truly impressive piece of Victorian craftsmanship.
