Description

A magnificent and imposing sterling silver wine cooler by the celebrated Birmingham silversmiths Elkington & Co., hallmarked London 1913 and weighing a remarkable 158 oz. Of oval form, the body is elaborately pierced and chased throughout. Openwork panels of foliate and Gothic quatrefoil design reveal the warm gilt liner within, creating a striking contrast between silver and gold that is both technically accomplished and visually arresting. Three boldly cast lion mask heads are applied to the body, from which hang finely detailed floral swag garlands, while the whole is raised on four elegant legs terminating in well-defined claw feet, a composition of neoclassical grandeur entirely in keeping with the ambition of its maker. Elkington & Co. were among the most distinguished and innovative silversmiths of their era, celebrated for the exceptional quality of their casting and chasing. Pieces of this scale and complexity represent the firm at the very height of its powers. A piece of commanding presence and exceptional craftsmanship, equally suited to use or display, and a rare and distinguished addition to any collection of fine English silver.
