Red Diamonds

Among all coloured diamonds, one colour is particularly rare: the predominantly red diamond. The red diamond must have no secondary purplish or brownish hue and must be of natural, untreated origin.

Red diamonds are renowned for their rarity and are primarily found in Australia (notably in the Argyle mine), as well as in Borneo, Brazil, India, and parts of South America. Gemmologists have studied these unique gems for decades, yet the exact cause of their distinctive colour remains a mystery. Their elusive nature captivates diamond enthusiasts worldwide, but very few individuals will ever have the opportunity to own one, as most red diamonds that exceed one carat are typically displayed in museums around the globe.

Due to their extreme scarcity, red diamonds are highly sought after at auction. The Hancock diamond, a stunning 0.95-carat round brilliant cut red diamond, was the most expensive gemstone per carat at the time of its sale in 1987. The largest red diamond ever discovered is the Moussaieff Red, which weighs 5.11 carats and was auctioned in 2001 for an estimated $8 million.

Originally known as the "Red Shield", this rough stone was discovered in Brazil's Minas Gerais region in the 1990s and weighed an impressive 13.90 carats. Minas Gerais is one of the most significant mining regions in the world, known for producing some of the world's largest diamonds.
