George V Silver-gilt Ginger Jar 1914
Hallmarked Chester
Description
A fine George V silver-gilt ginger jar in Charles II style, hallmarked Chester, 1914. Of substantial and elegant form, the jar features a classic ovoid baluster body surmounted by a high, domed push-in cover with an intricate foliate-moulded finial. The body is lavishly embellished with heavy, high-relief repoussé and chased decoration depicting undulating acanthus leaves, dense floral scrolls, and playful putti, mirroring the grand baroque aesthetics of the late 17th-century Restoration period. This ornate chased work is beautifully complemented by a warmly shimmering silver-gilt finish, which enhances the crisp depth of the chasing and accentuates the container's undulating contours. Raised on a carved, dark hardwood display stand, the piece possesses an imposing and highly celebratory presence. An exceptionally rare example of early 20th-century British silversmithing from the Chester assay office, it brilliantly captures the Edwardian and George V fascination with historicism and revival styles, making it equally suited to formal display or as a magnificent anchor to a premier collection of English silver.
