Edward VII Silver Handbell Harry Brasted, 1908
Hallmarked London
Description
A fine Edward VII silver handbell, hallmarked London, 1908, made by Harry Brasted. Of substantial and elegant form, the bell features a highly ornate, multi-tiered knopped baluster handle surmounted by a stylized knop finial, raised upon a shaped octagonal domed bell with a stepped, spreading foot and a crisp, molded border. The body is further enhanced with intricately chased or engraved scrolling foliage, palmettes, and textured cartouches within its panelled sections, lending the piece a distinctive baroque revival character, while the polished silver surface accentuates its complex architectural proportions and crisp detailing. A particularly fine example of early 20th-century British silver, highlighting the decorative historicism popular during the Edwardian period, and equally suited to practical use, display, or as a notable addition to a collection of English silver.
