Blue diamonds are renowned for their rarity and beauty. They are primarily found in the Cullinan Mine in South Africa, famous for producing some of the world's most notable diamonds, including the Cullinan Diamond. Although blue diamonds are sourced from this mine, they remain quite scarce.
Another prominent source of blue diamonds was the Argyle Mine, which closed in 2020. The blue diamonds from Argyle were highly sought after due to their unique shades and sizes.
The Golconda region in India holds historical significance as it produced some of the world's earliest and most famous diamonds, such as the Koh-i-Noor and the Hope Diamond. While blue diamonds from Golconda are ancient and not regularly mined today, they occupy a special place in diamond history.

Remarkably, for every 10,000 gem-quality diamonds discovered, only one showcases a beautiful fancy colour. The captivating hue of a blue diamond is due to trace amounts of boron within the diamond’s crystal structure, an element found deep beneath the ocean floors. This unique origin contributes to their rarity and allure. The intensity and shade of blue can vary depending on the concentration of boron: diamonds with higher levels tend to have a more intense blue colour. In contrast, those with lower concentrations exhibit a lighter or more subtle blue.
Additionally, the remarkable clarity of blue diamonds reflects their formation at depths exceeding 410 miles within the Earth’s lower mantle. This journey occurs approximately four times deeper than that of most traditional diamonds.
