Victorian Octagonal Cut Amethyst Cross Pendant in 18ct Yellow Gold
Octagonal Cut, Channel Set
Description
A statement 18ct yellow gold cross pendant, set with octagonal cut amethysts from the Victorian period. Twelve rich purple amethyst stones have been expertly cut to sit together, perfectly forming an iconic cross shape. A warm yellow gold mount securely holds these stones in place, with old cut diamond set sections adding a subtle sparkle. Cross pendants were particularly popular during the 19th-century, with examples being worn by pious individuals to demonstrate their faith. This example is virtually identical to the piece that was worn by Princess Beatrice (1857-1944) who was the youngest daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In more modern times, Jackie Kennedy had a large collection of cross pendants, which she wore frequently throughout her lifetime. Directly associated with Christians, the colour of amethyst is reminiscent of the wounds Christ suffered during crucifixion. Representing allegiance to Christ, it has been adopted by bishops and the clergy in general. Wearable today as a symbol of Christianity, or simply as an iconic form, the purple colour tones will look superb worn against a white silk shirt. A collectible piece that features French import marks, and a 46cm rope effect chain.
