An important 6.89ct Australian black opal commands attention as the centrepiece of our latest Masterpiece creation. Showcasing rarely seen spectacular colour flashes this cabochon opal has been secured by expertly shaped talon claws. The play of colours displayed in the central opal are perfectly complemented by hand selected carre’ cut multi-coloured sapphires, Paraiba tourmaline, ruby & Tsavorite garnet (1.25ct) that have been set into the gallery. Opals are truly unique wonders of nature, with the ethereal flashes of colour emanating from them being hugely desired and sought-after. This particular example showcases strong red and orange patterns, which highlights this as one of the finest in the world. Black opals are largely found in the Lightning Ridge area of Australia, and were formed approximately sixty million years ago, when silica rich water was carried into cracks and voids in the earth. As this water evaporated, it left behind a silica deposit, which formed the beautiful opals that we know today.
