Edwardian Aquamarine and Diamond Pendant 9.50ct in Platinum
Pearshape, Millegrain Set
Description
An impressive platinum, diamond and aquamarine drop pendant from the Edwardian era. Fashionable during the period, this type of pendant was created to be stand out when worn with the elaborate fashions of the day. A sky-blue pear cut aquamarine (9.50ct) forms the statement drop section securely millegrain set with a part openwork diamond set bottom section. This has been suspended from a smaller antique cushion cut aquamarine set in a stylised fan shaped top section. The design of this pendant reminds us of Queen Mary’s Cullinan VII & VIII brooches, which were worn throughout the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II. A member of the beryl family, aquamarine occurs in large crystal forms, with the most clear and vivid blue examples being highly prized. Old cut diamonds perfectly complement the two superb examples showcased here with geometric openwork details heralding the later strong lines of Art Deco. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces showcasing the very best diamonds and coloured gemstones were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses. Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion-conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time. A supremely elegant creation that follows the movement of the wearer with ease, it is as wearable today as it was when originally created.
