A rare 9ct yellow gold, diamond and enamel cockerel tie pin from the Victorian period. A 0.90ct old cut diamond has been expertly set to resemble the centre section of this proud bird, with the tail, feet and head contrasting superbly in richly detailed yellow gold. Captured in full crow, the animated comb and wattle glow in rich red enamel. Often presented to mark special occasions by relatives and loved ones, stick pins were often sentimental and highly treasured. The Russian Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1917) received countless numbers, which were all meticulously recorded in watercolours in a comprehensive jewel album.
The cockerel was a popular memorial symbol in Victorian times, and would have been recognised instantly as representing awakening.
