Description
A magnificent French silver racing trophy after the Raoul Verlet bronze 'La Douleur d'Orphée', presented for the 'Courses de Maison Laffitte Prix Lagrange 1897'. Depicting Orpheus in a state of grief following the death of Eurydice, he stands with arms aloft and lyre at his feet, astride Cerberus, the three-headed dog guarding Hell. Inscribed 'F. Barbedienne, Fondeur' The plaster model of 'La Douleur d'Orphee' was first exhibited at the Salon in 1887. Overall height is approximately 40ins. With mahogany plinth and engraved plaque.
