Description

A breathtaking, 15ct yellow gold, silver and diamond, nine strand, natural pearl collar from the Edwardian period. Nine alluring rows of lustrous, creamy white graduated certified natural pearls form a true statement collar. These beautiful pearls graduate in size from 3.1-6.2mm, with the largest examples forming a stunning focal point as they catch the eye sitting at the centre of the neck. Two silver spacer bars have been set with 2.64ct of sparkling old cut diamonds, completing the design of this stunning piece. Pearls were much favoured during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as this gemstone from the sea was viewed as a sign of purity and started to be worn by brides on their wedding day. Jewellery produced during this iconic era embraced the magical qualities of natural pearls, and resulted in them being featured in a wide range of designs. Natural pearls were incredibly sought after during this period, as they were plucked from the depths of the dangerous Persian Gulf by only the bravest of divers. The largest and most lustrous examples of natural pearls were worth far more than diamonds, and were worn with pride by royalty and the aristocracy. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces, showcasing the very best diamonds and gemstones, were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses.
Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time. The fashion for “dog collar” style chokers was introduced in the late 19th century by Queen Alexandra when Princess of Wales, who used them to hide a small scar on her neck.
