A captivating platinum, diamond and twenty row seed pearl choker necklace from the Edwardian period. Twenty rows of delicate, lustrous, creamy white seeds pearls have been used to create this statement collar. A dazzling, sparkling old cut diamond set (6.57ct) plaque section forms a stunning focal point, sitting at the centre of the neck. The three rectangular plaques are connected together and showcase openwork scrollwork and triangular forms. Two diamond set bar sections ensure the delicate pearl strands remain well spaced, and complete this stunning design. Pearls were much favoured during the Victorian and Edwardian periods, as this gemstone from the sea was viewed as a sign of purity and started to be worn by brides on their wedding day. Jewellery produced during this iconic era embraced the magical qualities of natural pearls, and resulted in them being featured in a wide range of designs. Natural pearls were incredibly sought after during this period, as they were plucked from the depths of the dangerous Persian Gulf by only the bravest of divers. The largest and most lustrous examples of natural pearls were worth far more than diamonds, and were worn with pride by royalty and the aristocracy. The Edwardian period only lasted for nine years (1901-1910), but it was an incredibly important era for jewellery design. Hugely intricate pieces, showcasing the very best diamonds and gemstones, were worn with elaborate fashions from the most famous French couture houses.
Driven by the explosion of court life, steered by the fashion conscious King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, this was a truly special time. The fashion for “dog collar” style chokers was introduced in the late 19th century by Queen Alexandra when Princess of Wales, who used them to hide a small scar on her neck.
