Late 19th-Century European Enamel & Diamond Hunting Horn Brooch 18ct Yellow Gold
Old Cut, Grain Set
Description
A finely enamelled and diamond set late-19th-century European hunting horn brooch. This delicate brooch has been beautifully modelled in gleaming 18ct yellow gold to showcase the intricate details of a hunting horn. Used widely since the 16th-century the unmistakeable sound of the hunting horn would signal the fevered start of the hunt. Almost a perfect miniature example the top section (bell) of the horn showcases exquisite red, white and blue enamel decoration. Distinctly neo-classical this decoration is comprised of lyre, scrollwork, and dart forms that bear similarities to ancient Roman artwork. Two bands of old cut diamonds define the enamel decoration ensuring a delicate sparkle when worn in the sunlight. Originally worn to secure a blouse at the neck, or on the lapel of a jacket or coat this beautiful example would have been a greatly treasured jewel. Actual hunting horns were often decorated for symbolic use with examples featuring in museum and private collections across the globe.
